Classes, Clubs and Activities for the Hosford Engaged and Active Teens (HEAT) program are run by a mix of dedicated teachers, volunteers, and after-school event companies.

MONDAY
Beginner After School Chess
At Checkmate Academy, our programs emphasise that chess is more then just a game - it’s an art of strategy and critical thinking. We strive to inspire a lifelong passion for chess while also equipping students with the ability to apply these strategic skills in the real-world.
When: Mondays 4:00-5:00 pm (9/14 - 11/2 8 sessions)

TUESDAY
MATH CLUB
Do you like figuring out challenging math problems? Hosford's math club is the place for you! You're welcome in the club whether you'd like to compete or not. We'll meet every other week until the Portland Mathcounts competition series day in February. The top 4 competitors from Oregon will earn all-expenses-paid trips to Washington D.C. to compete at nationals

Dance Club!
Learn dance routines with members of the Cleveland HS Tenacity Dance Team! The After-School Dance Club provides a fun, inclusive space for students to explore movement, rhythm, and self-expression. Open to all grades, this class offers an introduction to the high school dance team to experience what routines will look like. Questions? Email: alposko5815@student.pps.net

Electronics, Robotics and Programming with Arduino
Arduino is an open-source electronic platform enabling users to create interactive electronic objects, including robots. This class is the beginning of the Arduino journey, focused on microcontrollers and circuits. It starts with wiring basic components like LEDs, resistors, potentiometers, buttons and switches. Students will learn how to wire components together and how to program a microcontroller for custom interfaces they build. This class includes a starter kit of components for students to take home

.Hosford LUG (Lego Users Group)
Come build with the Hosford LEGO User Group. We will meet weekly for different activities including building challenges, parts drafts and other fun things in the LEGO world.

WEDNESDAY
Hosford Choir Club (CYC)
Find your voice with the Hosford Choir! Starting this fall, Cleveland HS Choir is hosting a Choir club at Hosford through the CYC program. The Hosford Choir Club is a welcoming and energetic community where students can develop their singing voices, build confidence, and discover the joy of making music together. Through engaging rehearsals, performances, and a variety of musical styles, students learn vocal technique, music literacy, teamwork, and self-expression while building friendships and a strong sense of belonging.
No previous choir experience is required - students of all skill levels are encouraged to participate, grow, and find their unique voice. CYC hosford will be invited to sing with the Choirs of Cleveland for various performances and exchanges throughout the year.

Feed the Mass Culinary Academy
Harvest Kitchen: Skills for Life is a hands-on fall cooking program for youth ages 11–18. Students build practical kitchen skills, confidence, cultural curiosity, teamwork, and leadership. Each session follows the Feed the Mass teaching model: welcome and safety check, instructor demonstration, team cooking, tasting and reflection, and a complete cleanup and sanitation close

Improv Comedy in Action!
Taught by long-time Improv Teacher & Performer, Nick Condon! Ready to laugh a lot and make stuff up on the spot? In this high-energy improvisation class, you’ll team up with fellow actors to play hilarious improv games, create short scenes, and jump into fun activities where anything can happen! No scripts, no pressure - all you need is imagination and openness to teamwork. You’ll build awesome skills like quick thinking, deep listening, being open to anything, communication, confidence, and collaboration—all while laughing A Lot! Whether you are brand new to improv or already love performing, everyone is welcome. Best of all, you’ll work together toward a fun showcase for parents at the end of the term so they can see what you’ve been creating! Hosted by New Moon Productions, a youth theater company inspiring young performers since 1994. Come play, perform, and have a blast!

Sign Language Class
Come learn the basic signs of American Sign Language: we will focus on the alphabet, numbers, colors, feelings, animals and verbs.
You will learn to create sentences and have conversations with your friends!
When: Thursdays 4:10 - 5:10

Friday
This course teaches you core AI and Machine Learning (ML) concepts, including neural network structures like neurons and layers. You'll gain practical experience with AI tools such as ChatGPT. You will also learn to train AI models and build projects, including an AI chatbot, image recognition, and text recognition programs.

Ultimate Frisbee
Looking for something fun and active after school? Come give ultimate frisbee a try! It’s a fast-paced game where you run, pass, and score with a frisbee while working together as a team. Whether you’ve played sports before or just want to try something new with friends, ultimate frisbee is easy to learn and a great way to get moving and have fun. This program is run through Portland Youth Ultimate, a group that helps kids in our community learn the sport, build teamwork, and enjoy being active.

Scholarships / Financial Assistance
The HEAT program seeks to make these activities accessible to all Hosford students. Since some classes do require a payment, the PTSA can provides scholarships to offset some or all of the cost. Please contact a school counselor, or email ptsahosford@gmail.com for more information.
About the H.E.A.T. Program
H.E.A.T. (Hosford Engaged and Active Teens) is a partnership of the Hosford Middle School and the PTSA. The H.E.A.T. program seeks to build students' social/emotional, physical, intellectual and creative competencies.
Classes are provided through a combination of activity providers and volunteer instruction. If you, or someone you know, has a skill, talent or incredible knowledge to share plus an enthusiasm for working with and teaching middle school kids, let us know!
