Classes, Clubs and Activities for the Hosford Engaged and Active Teens (HEAT) program are run by a mix of dedicated teachers, volunteers, and after-school event companies.




MONDAY



mATH CLUB

Do you like figuring out challenging math problems?  Hosford's math club is the place for you!  You're welcome in the club whether you'd like to compete or not.  We'll meet every-other week until the Portland Mathcounts competition series day in February.  The top 4 competitors from Oregon will earn all-expenses-paid trips to Washington D.C. to compete at nationals

When: The winter meetings in this season's math club will be these dates at 4:05PM

                 1/5,   1/12,   2/2,   2/9,   2/17 (final meeting)

              2/21 competition at Laurelhurst School!

3D Design and Print, Beginner Level 1

Three program levels (Beginner Level 1, Level 2, and Intermediate on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday):

  • Beginner Level I: Mondays, 4:15-5:45 pm (2/2/2026 - 3/16-2026)

    • Discover the basics of 3D design and printing while creating fun, personalized projects. Great for students with no experience in 3D.

TUESDAY


Youth Leadership

Students will engage in a variety of fun and interactive activities designed to transform tweens into confident, capable, and well-rounded young leaders. 

Activities include:

  • Cooperative Games: These emphasize teamwork, shared responsibility, and problem-solving, teaching students how to work effectively towards a common goal.

  • Public Speaking: Students will gain confidence and clarity in expressing their ideas, learning how to present themselves and their thoughts effectively to both peers and adults.

  • Team-Building Activities: Carefully structured challenges will help students develop trust, communication, and mutual respect within a group setting.

When: Tuesdays 4:00 - 5:00 pm (1/6/2026 - 3/17/2026)

Electronics, Robotics and Programming with Arduino

Arduino is an open-source electronic platform enabling users to create interactive electronic objects, including robots. This class is the beginning of the Arduino journey, focused on microcontrollers and circuits. It starts with wiring basic components like LEDs, resistors, potentiometers, buttons and switches. Students will learn how to wire components together and how to program a microcontroller for custom interfaces they build. This class includes a starter kit of components for students to take home.

When: Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30pm, Starting 1/6/2026 - 3/17/2026 (Ten 1.5 hour sessions)

3D Design and Print, Beginner Level 2

Three program levels (Beginner Level 1, Level 2, and Intermediate on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday):

  • Beginner Level II: Tuesdays, 4:15-5:45 pm (2/3/2026 - 3/10/2026)

    • Build upon existing 3D knowledge and skills with more advanced designs, multi-part prints, and creative challenges. Great for students with any knowledge and experience in 3D. Beginner Level I class is encouraged to take first but not required.

WEDNESDAY

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Step into a world of magic and mystery with our Dungeons & Dragons After-School Club! Join us for thrilling campaigns where you’ll embark on epic quests, battle fearsome creatures, and unlock hidden treasures. Students will arrange in their own groups with their own Dungeon Master. If interested, please register so we can get an idea of interest and attendance.

When: Wednesday 4:00-5:00

3D Design and Print, Intermediate Level 1

Three program levels (Beginner Level 1, Level 2, and Intermediate on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday):

  • Intermediate Level I: Wednesdays, 4:15-5:45 pm (1/28/2006 - 3/4/2026)

    • Students stretch past their foundational skills by designing more complex creations— objects that move, connect, or have specific functions. They learn how to troubleshoot print issues and adjust their designs, empowering them to think like inventive problem-solvers and work as a collaborative team. Level I and Level II classes are encouraged to take first but not required.

Speech and Debate

Cleveland High School, the #1 speech and debate team in Oregon is returning to Hosford to work with your middle schoolers! Students build confidence,  critical-thinking, and learn to express their ideas with clarity and creativity. Our fun weekly practices explore events ranging from dramatic interpretation of their favorite stories to structured debates. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to try something new!

THURSDAY

Sign Language Class


Come learn the basic signs of American Sign Language: we will focus on the alphabet, numbers, colors, feelings, animals and verbs.

You will learn to create sentences and have conversations with your friends!

Acting and Improv Adventures

Status: Fall season in session, WINTER Season Now Enrolling

Be part of your own improv & acting troupe! Learn to let go and act
in the moment with your ensemble of improvisers & actors, with games and activities that develop essential performance skills. This class is for improvisers & actors of all ability levels will focus on quick thinking, active listening, communication, collaboration, and play.
Laughter and fun are guaranteed! Students will work towards a performance for a small invited audience at the end of the term!

Hosford LUG (Lego Users Group)

Come build with the Hosford LEGO User Group. We will meet weekly for different activities including building challenges, parts drafts and other fun things in the LEGO world.

Scholarships / Financial Assistance

The HEAT program seeks to make these activities accessible to all Hosford students. Since some classes do require a payment, the PTSA can provides scholarships to offset some or all of the cost. Please contact a school counselor, or email ptsahosford@gmail.com for more information.

About the H.E.A.T. Program

H.E.A.T. (Hosford Engaged and Active Teens) is a partnership of the Hosford Middle School and the PTSA. The H.E.A.T. program seeks to build students' social/emotional, physical, intellectual and creative competencies.

Classes are provided through a combination of activity providers and volunteer instruction. If you, or someone you know, has a skill, talent or incredible knowledge to share plus an enthusiasm for working with and teaching middle school kids, let us know!
