Classes, Clubs and Activities for the Hosford Engaged and Active Teens (HEAT) program are run by a mix of dedicated teachers, volunteers, and after school event companies.


MONDAY


TUESDAY

BROADWAY BOUND: MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP

Status: NOW Enrolling for FALL 2025!!

Experience the excitement and fun involved in creating musical theater. Participants will build their skills with an experienced musical theater teacher to explore and build skills singing, easy to learn movement/dance, and how to make strong acting choices when performing musical theater.  This class is for students of all ability and experience levels.  Students will work towards a small performance for a small invited audience at the end of the term!

When: Tuesdays, 4:15-5:15pm, Starting 9/16/2025 - 12/16/2025 (12 classes)

Cost: $190, or $360 if you take along with Thursday’s Acting and Improv class

Electronics, Robotics and Programming with Arduino

Arduino is an open-source electronic platform enabling users to create interactive electronic projects. This class teaches how to build interactive circuits connected to a microcontroller. Students learn the basics of the C++ programming language to write simple programs to interact with the microcontroller and custom interfaces they build. This class shows how to wire basic components like LEDs, resistors, potentiometers, buttons and switches on a breadboard. These basic components are put together to make a controller for and adressable LED strip and a simple MIDI musical instrument. This class includes a starter kit of components for students to take home with them.

When: Tuesdays, 4:00-5:00pm, Starting 9/16/2025 - 12/9/2025 (no class 11/11 or 11/25)

WEDNESDAY

Step into a world of magic and mystery with our Dungeons & Dragons After-School Club! Join us for thrilling campaigns where you’ll embark on epic quests, battle fearsome creatures, and unlock hidden treasures. Students will arrange in their own groups with their own Dungeon Master. If interested, please register so we can get an idea of interest and attendance.

When: Wednesday 4:00-5:00

Where: Ms. Eigo’s Classroom 118

Acting and Improv Adventures

Status: The class is currently full. But! We please sign up for the Waiting List. It's possible we may expand the class, or add another class.

Be part of your own improv & acting troupe! Learn to let go and act
in the moment with your ensemble of improvisers & actors, with games and activities that develop essential performance skills. This class is for improvisers & actors of all ability levels will focus on quick thinking, active listening, communication, collaboration, and play.
Laughter and fun are guaranteed! Students will work towards a performance for a small invited audience at the end of the term!

When: Thursday 4:15-5:15 Starting 9/18/2025 - 12/18/2025

Cost: $190 ($360 for both if you take along with Broadway Bound class)

Hosford LUG (Lego Users Group)

When: Thursdays 4:10 - 5:30 pm

Starting 9/4 (First session 4:10-5:00 pm)

Come build with the Hosford LEGO User Group. We will meet weekly for different activities including building challenges, parts drafts and other fun things in the LEGO world.

PDX Mini Makers

PDX MiniMakers is a hands-on after-school program where kids explore engineering, design, and problem-solving through 3D printing. Our goal is to spark curiosity and confidence in students by letting them design something of their own and see it come to life, all within a supportive, engaging environment. This is not just an introduction to a tool, but an entry point to thinking like makers, problem solvers, and innovators.


When: Wednesdays, with a free Intro workshop September 10

Sign Language

Status: Will Return in the Fall, Tuesdays or Wednesdays

Come learn the basic signs of American Sign Language: we will focus on the alphabet, numbers, colors, feelings, animals and verbs.

You will learn to create sentences and have conversations with your friends!

Speech and Debate

Status: Speech and Debate is planned again this year, check back for details

Attention speech and debate families. Cleveland High School, the #1 speech and debate team in Oregon is coming to Hosford to work with your middle schoolers! Some schedule details may change. Interested in Spring Session? Fill out form below!

Scholarships / Financial Assistance

The HEAT program seeks to make these activities accessible to all Hosford students. Since some classes do require a payment, the PTSA can provides scholarships to offset some or all of the cost. Please contact a school counselor, or email ptsahosford@gmail.com for more information.

About the H.E.A.T. Program

H.E.A.T. (Hosford Engaged and Active Teens) is a partnership of the Hosford Middle School and the PTSA. The H.E.A.T. program seeks to build students' social/emotional, physical, intellectual and creative competencies.

Classes are provided through a combination of activity providers and volunteer instruction. If you, or someone you know, has a skill, talent or incredible knowledge to share plus an enthusiasm for working with and teaching middle school kids, let us know!
